Ethno Australia is an annual international musical exchange organised in partnership with JM International – JMI.

In this unique project, musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds meet and share culture through music in a 10 day intensive exchange located in an exquisite space near Byron Bay. Each person is invited to teach a song from their particular folk or cultural tradition by ear to the group. This is followed by a regional tour of concerts as the Ethno Folk Orchestra, peaking with 4 days of performances at the Bello Winter Music Festival, in beautiful Bellingen.

Ethno Australia has a strong focus on Indigenous Australian culture and traditional song-lines and we would like to acknowledge the peoples of the Bundjalung nations where Ethno Australia is held. Past years have included artists from Solomon Islands, Rotuma, Vanuatu and the Torres Strait Islands, as well as Sweden, South Sudan, France, Croatia, Israel, Iran, Brazil, Iraq, Turkey, Thailand, India, Chile, Belgium and England.

For this year’s Ethno Australia, we are thrilled to have Aboriginal (Kabi Kabi) Torres Strait (Mer Is) and South Sea Is (Ambrum Is) woman, Aunty Ruth, internationally-renowned Australian percussionist Greg Sheehan and Israeli/Australian guitarist Dudi Shaul as facilitators. We encourage bands, duos and trios to apply as additional festival performance opportunities will be available. Contact us now to be part of this incredible project.
