This week was a great week to harvest the last lotus roots in our garden. We grow them in big containers filled with mud, soil and water. The lotus roots are from, what the name is already saying, from the lotus flower. It is an aquatic plant of the Nelumbonaceae family. The lotus flower represents purity, beauty and sexual innocence for thousands of years in numerous Asian countries.

We use the roots to make delicious dishes for our guests of the retreat or for our lovely volunteers. You can deep-fry, stir-fry, braise or cook it in various interesting ways. It is also used as a herbal medicine. This time we used the lotus to make a stir wry with dried Sichuan peppers, salt, soy sauce and topped with fresh spring onions(also from our gardens!). You want to make grow your own lotus? Check out this website. They explain step by step how you can grow them.
